Qigong “Qi” means energy and “gong” means skills. Qigong or “Chi-Kung” as it is known in the west, is a traditional Chinese health exercise that uses repetitive arm-body movements with deep breathing and focus to harmonize and balance the yin and yang (positive and negative) forces in the body. This helps to enhance a person health and well being, thus improving the immune system. Originally known as “nei-gong” or internal skill in the Chinese Martial arts, the word “qigong” was first used in the early fifties to encourage the practice of these therapeutic exercises for health instead of martial purposes. The function of qigong is to unify the body’s forces and connect them to the body’s energy center called the Dantian, which is 2-3 inches below the navel. Its first goal is to open the channels, nourish the Dantian and have qi flows naturally to strengthen all parts of the body. An exercise that is gentle and flowing in movements, Qigong can be practiced by anyone regardless of age. Diligent and continuous practice of qigong can also leads to self-fulfillment and spiritual enrichment. There are many types of Qigong exercises developed by accomplished teachers from martial arts exercises such as the art of Taijiquan. Though the movements and ways are many, the goal is the same. Qigong, unlike learning the art of Taijiquan, is less complicated and easier to learn. Their main purpose is to enhance a person’s well-being and not necessary to learn how to use it for self-defense. Qigong is also the foundation exercise when learning Taiji. The exercise of qigong can helps to open up the 18 major joints of the body and enhance the total well being of a person. It is a very beneficial exercise to relax the body and to strengthen the internal organs of the person. It can helps to:
The health benefit of Qigong is based on the same principle as of Chinese medicine. If Qi is flowing, there is no pain. If there is pain it is because the qi is obstructed.
