Tai Chi
…the Pearl of the Orient
Taijiquan or
Tai Chi as it is known in the west, is a gentle Chinese martial art
exercise practiced by millions all over the world. As well as a very
effective martial art for self-defense, it has been more known for its
amazing health benefits by countless practitioners throughout the
world.
Combining soft,
relaxing movements with abdominal breathing; Taiji has been termed as
an art of “meditation in motion”. It uses the universal principle of
the two opposite and complimentary forces called yin and yang, to
harmonize and balance the body’s energies to move as a whole and
united structure.
Its main
characteristics of movement derive from the “Chan Ssu Jing” or the
natural spiral movement of the silk worm when they are producing silk.
These slow, gentle, circular and continuous movements of the body and
limbs help to open up the eighteen major joints of the body, thus
increasing blood flow to all parts of the extremities.
These characteristics
coupled with diligent practice produced a very powerful and effective
exercise for health and well-being. The correct practice of Taijiquan
can help a practitioner to achieve maximum health benefits, including;
·
Reduced stress and hypertension
·
Lowers high blood pressure
·
Alleviates joint problems
·

There are many different styles of Taijiquan.
The original style was created by the 9th
generation of the Chen Family, Chen Wang-ting in the beginning of the
17th century
in Chenjiagou (Chen village), Henan, China. Chen created the art of
Taijiquan with the goals of achieving both health and martial
proficiency.
Taijiquan can be practiced by anyone, young
and old, anywhere and at any time. Because of its simplicity and
versatility of practice, it requires only minimal space and time for
practice to be effective. Apart from giving the practitioner a healthy
cardio workout without stress, the practice of Taiji has also been
time tested to be of added value for the focus and discipline of the
mind. Its relaxing techniques have nursed many people back to health,
including better concentration, memory and alertness.
